The Rockies

Banff to Jasper - June 2006

Bald Eagles are far more scarce in the Rockies than on the coast.  This was one of a pair that were seen at Vermillion Lakes near Banff.

Clark's Nutcrackers proved to be common, especially where there were people with food.  The lower bird even took cookies out of my hand!

This Red-naped Sapsucker was seen from our cabin at Patricia Lake near Jasper.  It seemed to prefer being a contortionist rather sucking sap!

This Violet-green Swallow was seen collecting mud at Lake Louise.  The species was seen at several sites during the trip.

A few Ospreys were seen during the trip, all in the Rockies.  This one was over a lake just outside of Jasper.

Chipping Sparrows were very common at some sites in the Rockies.

Brown-headed Cowbirds were very tame at some places.  The lower bird came within a few feet.

Cedar Waxwings were seen at several locations.

The only Barrow's Goldeneye of the trip was at Moose Lake, on the road from Jasper to Kamloops.

Ring-necked Ducks were seen in small numbers at several sites.

This Red-winged Blackbird was at Vermillion Lakes near Banff.  The species was common at other places with wetland habitat.

Ravens were common, particularly in the Rockies.

American Crows were common in the Rockies but were replaced by the North-western Crow on the coast.

Common Loon/Great Northern Divers were common on large lakes and also on the sea.
